Application of ontologies

Ontologies are formalised conceptual models of a domain; they typically describe the most important classes of entities and the relations among them. In LISp-Miner, we envisage to use ontologies as additional input to the KDD process. Presumably, the structures of ontology classes and relations may

• help the modeller understand the essence of the domain and data
• partially automate the formulation of relevant analytic questions
• provide domain-grounded explanations of discovered hypotheses
• enable to present the KDD results on the semantic web.

Very initial experiments are now carried out in the medical domain. The problem of ontology introduction to KDD is also addressed by the Knowledge Discovery and Ontologies (KDO-2004) workshop.
